Midsummer

It's the Summer Solstice today, and the rain has stopped here ... well, for a while at least, I hope.

This older picture, taken in 2006, looks west, across Marlow Gravel Pits, with the setting sun hidden behind a bank of cloud.

With the sun hidden, it was safe for both the photographer's eyes (Mine! I'm rather attached to them) and the camera sensor, and the brightness of the sun didn't dominate the exposure and reduce the clouds to empty silhouettes.

I used some exposure compensation to darken the tone of the sky to what I wanted, making the rays of the setting sun stand out: I'd probably expose it differently these days and use a more fulsome exposure, exposing to the right as far as possible and adjusting the tonality during post processing.

Although the shutter speed was high enough for me to safely handhold the camera, I used a tripod and a electronic cable release to allow me to shoot a series of pictures as the sun set without the camera moving between exposures.

The technical bit:
Focal length: 20mm
Aperture: f6.7
Shutter Speed: 1/180 of a second
Exposure compensation: -1 stop
Sensitivity: ASA / ISO 100
